History of Kendal on Hudson

A Tradition Rooted in Quaker Values

Kendal on Hudson is a not-for-profit Life Plan Community in Sleepy Hollow, New York, about 25 miles north of New York City. Built on a foundation of Quaker values and principles, we are an inclusive and welcoming community overlooking the Hudson River.

We opened in May 2005 and remain the premiere accredited not-for-profit Life Plan Community in the Hudson Valley. Kendal on Hudson was developed by three groups focused on working with residents to ensure that older years are years of continued living and learning.

The first group was the Study Group on Retirement Alternatives, a committee of members of Quaker meetings located in Westchester County, New York, and in Southwestern Connecticut. They represented the interests of local area residents and initiated and led the development process beginning in 1994.

Second, the Phelps Memorial Hospital Center became part of the conversation when land was identified on the campus of the hospital.

The third group, Kendal Corporation, with its Quaker heritage and emphasis on respect for the individual, excellence in service, social responsibility, and fiscal integrity, was a natural fit.
