3 Questions To Ask When Considering a Life Plan Community

Maybe you or your loved ones are trying to decide on which senior living community meets everyone’s requirements, or it could be that you’re just not sure where to start. When planning your life, you look forward to an independent lifestyle that gives you peace of mind.

Many older adults choose to transition into a Continuing Care Retirement Community, also known as a CCRC. They offer a full continuum of medical care and a wide spectrum of senior living options. They’re also known as Life Plan Communities.

As stated in this 2019 study, moving into a “Life Plan Community boosted feelings of improved control in enjoyment of daily activities, decision-making and concentration.” What’s important in a Life Plan Community is that the needs of older adults are provided for, from wellness to activities and from learning to dining.

Keep reading to learn about the big three questions to ask when entering Life Plan Community considerations.

What services are included with my monthly fee?

Be sure to get a full breakdown of plans and contracts available to you so that you can properly budget. All Life Plan Communities require an entry fee, and you’ll also pay a monthly fee. It’s important to be clear on what levels of care are covered by the monthly rate. While the community may feature a full continuum of care, your contract type affects medical rates and assorted costs.

At Kendal on Hudson, we offer a Lifecare contract to cover various services and amenities.

How have your monthly rates changed over the last five years?

Ask for both monthly figures and yearly averages to get a full picture of the community’s financial stability. Knowing this helps you sketch out a five-year action plan and reach an estimate as to how much you can expect monthly costs to increase.

It’ll also give you an idea of how much the community has expanded.

How many Independent Living units are available?

If you’re looking into Independent Living, it’s important to know how soon you can move in so that you can plan ahead. Knowing the ratio of Independent Living units to assisted living units will help you determine where the community excels. What about other types of long-term care, such as skilled nursing or support for memory issues?

Having a sense of the number of units, both open and occupied, helps you learn about the community culture and resident happiness. It also gives you a sense of whether the community prioritizes helping residents live with autonomy by quantifying demand for the space.
