What to Expect During the Admission Process for a Senior Living Community

Once you’ve decided to move to a senior living community and begin enjoying more of the lifestyle you love without the hassles of home ownership or housekeeping, one of the hardest parts is over: finding the community that meets your needs and can keep up with or enhance your current lifestyle. Next, it can help to learn what to expect in the admissions process.

“When you choose the senior living community that meets your needs and get ready for move-in, you’ll submit a health and financial application,” according to Deborah Potter, Marketing Consultant at Kendal on Hudson, the only true Life Care community in Westchester County. “This process assesses your ability to live and thrive in independent living.  It also allows the community to get to know you and learn how to best support your wellness and lifestyle goals as part of the Kendal family.”

What to Expect During the Application Process

    • You’ll meet a lot of people. From health services staff to the Director of Resident Services and the CEO, you’ll meet all the people who can help you learn about everything from the resident-driven programs and activities, the services the community offers, where everything is, what is happening throughout the community and more. You are also likely to meet those within the business office who handle billing and payments and have a hand in helping you secure your financial assets.
    • A list of paperwork you need. You may need statements from doctors, a complete medical history, a financial application, and supporting documentation of assets and income.
    • A tour. You’ll receive a tour of the community and may meet a welcome committee who will inform you of different things going on throughout the community. At Kendal on Hudson, this could include how to join the resident council, how to create your own club or program based on your interests and what opportunities for, learning, volunteering and travel exist just outside your door.
  • Health assessments. The senior living community’s health center may perform a physical and compile your health records from your primary care physician. This is to help them establish what your goals are, what you may want to improve or how to maintain your current level of health.

Each senior living community is different and may have their own criteria that they need to complete their application process. If you have any questions, simply talk to the community’s team to learn more.
