4 Easy Ways for Seniors to Spring Clean Their Health Routine During COVID-19

When many seniors think about spring, they often think of spring cleaning and all the ways they need to prepare for the season ahead. This season, however, looks a little bit different. We now have more time to spring clean, focus on organizing our homes and more. We also have more time to evaluate how we want to live in the future and what we’d like to improve. This makes now a crucial time to focus on health, wellness and how to create better habits in the future.

“Now is one of the best times to evaluate and spring clean your health routine. It’s a perfect opportunity to shed the bad habits that old man winter brought in while having additional time to focus on the new, blank slate that spring offers,” says Cathy DiSomma, Fitness Coordinator at Kendal on Hudson, the only true Life Plan community in Westchester County. “Not to mention, it’s a great opportunity to get a jump start on living the lifestyle you’ve been wanting to but haven’t had the time to begin. Start now to create the habits you want to have moving forward while improving your health, enhancing your fitness and being the best version of you.”

Spring Cleaning Your Health Routine

When it comes to your spring cleaning your health routine, try out some of our tips to help make the most of your health and let your best self bloom, even during COVID-19!

  1. Get some sun. While it might not be possible to go to many places where people tend to congregate, it can still be nice to get out and enjoy less busy areas within nature. When spring comes around and the weather is nicer, embrace the desire to get outside and get active. Go for a walk alone, tend to your garden and feel the nice breeze. If you’d prefer to remain home, simply read a book on the patio, tend to your yard or make some sun tea!
  1. Throw away your bad eating habits. Just like you do with old papers, unwanted items and trash, throw away the eating habits that are keeping you from reaching your goals. Shop online for some healthy snacks and pick them up curbside, get rid of ready-to-eat freezer meals that are high in calories and sodium and instead purchase lean meats and fiber-rich foods and have them delivered. Swap out your soda for water or even a flavored sparkling water.
  1. Get your hands dirty and break a sweat. Whether you are cleaning and dusting your apartment, planting a garden full of fruits and vegetables, beautiful flowers and herbs or organizing your household, you can easily increase your activity.
  1. Instead of setting a cleaning schedule, make a workout schedule. Getting exercise and focusing on your health and well-being is crucial to remaining active, independent and fit. Schedule exercise, improve your balance or focus on increasing your strength. Try out some virtual exercise videos, try a new workout from YouTube or simply practice yoga outside! Kendal on Hudson has even posted some workouts on YouTube.Beginning now can create a good routine that can help to keep you healthy for years to come.
