March 2, 2023 —
Winter is here and often it’s one of the most loved and hated seasons. While it boasts the beauty of the holidays, light snowfalls and the closeness of family, it also holds the title of “most likely to make you sick.” While many tend to be healthy all year round, winter can cause some sniffles, coughs and all-around sickness that can put a damper on your season. Don’t let a cold stop you from enjoying each day to its fullest – instead, stop it where it starts by improving your immune system.
“As many of our residents know, health and wellness are a vital component to keeping your mind and body well all winter long,” says Julie Moran, RN, Resident Care Manager at Kendal on Hudson, the only true Life Care community in Westchester County. “By focusing on this and finding ways to proactively enhance your health and boost your immune system, you are likely to skip some of the sickness this season and enjoy a healthier, happier winter!”
Tips for Boosting Your Immune System this Winter
It may seem like boosting your immune system will be difficult or a lot of hard work, but when you add these tips to an already healthy and active lifestyle, it can be so easy. Consider some of the following ways that Harvard Health shares that can help you enhance your immune system this winter
- Eat a healthy diet. According to the article, a healthy diet can help to boost immune system. Try to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to help protect your body through this winter’s illnesses. If you suspect your diet is lacking, try to take a multivitamin.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Exercise has an array of benefits for the body, aside from lowering the risk of high blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health. Try to exercise and get active to promote good circulation and allow the cells and substances of the immune system to do their job more effectively.
- Quit smoking and only drink in moderation. We all know the dangers that excessive drinking and smoking can have. If you currently smoke, you should talk to your doctor about quitting. It’s also important to drink in moderation, as well.
- Get good sleep and lessen your stress. Stress can cause lack of sleep, a higher risk of sickness, burnout and more. Try to manage your stress with yoga or a mindful activity and ensure you get plenty of sleep.
- Be sure to practice safety. Germs spread like wildfire, especially during the winter. Be sure to wash your hands often, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing and avoid close contact with anyone who is sick. If you’re cooking, be sure to cook meat to the correct temperature and serve foods at the right temperature, as well.
