What's
New at Kendal on Hudson

A collaboration of Kendal on Hudson residents and members of Neighborhood House, a local senior center, was formed this year through a grant from Kendal Charitable Funds. The purpose of the grant is for outreach to the wider community in bringing people together through programs and classes.
Members of Neighborhood House together with residents recently attended a three-part collage and sketch drawing class held at the Kendal art studio. Presented by instructor, Chris Blatt, students were taught the basics of collage and during the third class, demonstrated sketch drawings. After each class, lunch was shared by the group in the Bistro.
As a result of attending the classes together, Neighborhood House members invited resident artists to participate in their upcoming summer art show at the Warner Library in Tarrytown
Kendal on Hudson will be honored as Organization of the Year

Kendal on Hudson will be honored as the Organization of the Year by The Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns at an annual dinner dance and auction on March 31, 2012.
The Foundation is grateful for the strong commitment Kendal has placed on the Tarrytown Public Schools. Kendal's dedication in working with students on the
intergenerational programs has enriched the student body greatly. The Foundation is also appreciative to Kendal residents for setting an example of the importance of education for their students.
Most recently, an intergenerational initiative was a Memoir Study with residents and 3rd-5th grade English Arts Enrichment students at Washington Irving School. The project has 60 students participating who had chosen a time period of interest and researched it enough to be able to imagine themselves part of it. For example, one student studied the American Revolution and imagined himself as a soldier. Another student studied the events of the 1960's, including the Vietnam War and the Space Program. Each child wrote a fictional memoir about his or her "experiences" during a period of history. The students met with a group of residents to listen to some of their memories such as growing up during an earlier time; what it was like to flee Europe during WWII; and what it was like to be part of the early movie making industry in the 1940's.
The students shared their projects with the residents and guests at Kendal on Hudson on January 11th.

It was a collaborative effort and we are all proud of this achievement.
